Established in 1824, Indian Affairs is the oldest bureau of the U.S. Department of the Interior. Within the government-to-government relationship, Indian Affairs provides services directly or through contracts, grants, or compacts to 566 federally recognized tribes with a service population of about 1.9 million American Indians and Alaska Natives.

As the Budget Officer for Indian Affairs, you are responsible for all aspects of the Federal budget process, including planning, formulation, presentation, justification and execution.

Major Duties:
• Serves as the principal senior executive responsible for long-range planning and integration of budget and program plans. He/she ensures that organization and budget management structures support the Bureau's efforts to foster a culture that unifies business process engineering and practices and organizational missions and goals.
• Formulates strategic and annual plans and budget with goals, objectives, milestones, performance standards and measurement systems.
• Advises other senior executives on budget issues and coordinates with and supports other offices of the Office of the Assistant Secretary - Indian Affairs, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Bureau of Indian Education.
• Directs the presentation and preparation of budget estimates and justifications to the Department, OMB and Congress. Manages the OMB "pass back" process for the Bureau by making recommendations about items to be appealed.
• Prepares witnesses for Congressional hearings, serves as a witness when necessary, and coordinates all communication in the appropriation process, including planning, formulation, presentation, justification and execution of the President's Budget for the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
• Attends conferences, tribal meetings and participates on top-level task forces or advisory committees with full authority to convey the Assistant Secretary's and Bureau's position(s) regarding budget and strategic planning.
