California tribe defends off-reservation casino

The leader of the Lytton Band of Pomo Indians says tribal opposition to its off-reservation casino in the Bay Area is "unfortunate."

Chairwoman Margie Mejia responded to a letter from the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians in southern California. She said the Pechanga's opposition ignores the tribe's lengthy fight for a compact and local support for the casino.

The Lytton Band received land in the city of San Pablo through a Congressional rider. The tribe didn't have to go through a lengthy and costly review process typically required of off-reservation casinos.
