The Montana House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on a bill to codify the state's process for negotiating tribal gaming compacts.
Tribal and state representatives testified in favor of the measure. Sponsor Rep. Norma Bixby (D) said it sets up a legally defensible way to negotiate.
But opponents from religious and anti-gambling groups fear the bill will lead to more gaming and social ills.
