Ohio senators hope to curtail new tribal casinos

Ohio Sens. Sens. George Voinovich and Mike DeWine, both Republicans, are pushing bills to limit the expansion of the Indian gaming industry.

On July 27, Voinovich introduced S.1518. The bill would bar tribes from operating Class III casinos in states, like Ohio, where "commercial" gambling is illegal.

A second bill will be announced today in Ohio. It is not clear what it will do but it could change the land claim exception under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act to require state approval for gaming on ancestral lands, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer.

The Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma and the Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma have filed claims to land in Ohio.
