Legalization of slot machines near for Florida tribes

Slot machines are on their way to tribal casinos, tribal officials and observers say.

Voters in two South Florida counties are going to the polls on March 8 for a referendum to allow slot machines at racetracks. Passage is expected, The St. Petersburg Times reports.

But even if the referendum failed, the tribes say they will be able to offer the lucrative Class III machines because state law no longer bars them. The Seminole Tribe and the Miccosukee Tribe operate seven casinos, mostly filled with electronic machines.
