Narragansett Tribe seeks referendum on casino

The Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island and its gaming partner Harrah's Entertainment renewed their proposal for a $650 million casino resort and called on a statewide referendum in November.

The tribe wants to locate the casino in the town of West Warwick, which welcomes the proposal. But the issue has been kept from the ballot for several years.

New legislation hopes to resolve constitutional problems with last year's referendum. Gov. Donald Carcieri (R) said he would veto the bill.
