County to stick with off-reservation casino deal

A New Mexico county plans to stick with an agreement to host an off-reservation casino despite a legal opinion questioning its validity.

The Doņa Ana County Commission signed a deal with Jemez Pueblo for a casino 300 miles away from the tribe's reservation. The deal prevents the commission from doing anything to block the casino.

State attorney general Patricia Madrid last week issued an advisory letter [Text] last week that said such a provision is unlawful. The county attorney and the tribe disagree with her analysis.
