Editorial: Gov. Bush should not allow slots for tribes

"Gov. Bush knows that Florida will have to live with more gambling, but he correctly favors as little expansion as possible as he negotiates on two fronts.

Gambling has such destructive social impacts that, on both fronts, Gov. Bush should work to limit Florida gambling to Class II slots and high taxation. Even if a court interprets federal law to require Class III slots for the tribes, non-Indian casinos in Broward should not get the same. If Gov. Bush had campaigned more against slots last year, he might have avoided the current problem. Now, he must avoid the worst outcome, which would be Vegas-style gambling with casino-friendly taxation."
