Osage Nation seeks extension in NIGC investigation

The Osage Nation of Oklahoma is asking the National Indian Gaming Commission for more time to produce documents related to the management of the tribe's casinos.

The NIGC is trying to determine whether the casinos are being operated under a management contract or a consulting agreement. Management contracts require federal review and approval while consulting agreements do not.

The tribe says it needs an extension to gather all the documents requested by the agency. The tribe contends is has a consulting agreement that is no subject to federal review.

In at least one other case in Oklahoma, the NIGC determined that a consulting agreement was a management contract. In another Oklahoma case, the NIGC fined a tribe for operating a casino without an approved management contract.
