Barstow gaming initiative to go before city voters

Voters in Barstow, California, will be asked to approve an Indian gaming initiative next summer.

The city council voted 4-0 on Monday to put the "Indian Gaming: Preference for tribes in San Bernardino County" on the ballot. It asks whether voters support the creation of a casino in a "casino zone."

The initiative is generating controversy because the casino zone includes land owned by the Chemehuevi Tribe. Two other tribes who signed gaming compact with the state are apparently not included. The Chemehuevis don't have a compact for Barstow.
