Rhode Island court rejects tribal gaming legislation


The Rhode Island Supreme Court issued an advisory opinion on Monday, rejecting state legislation that would allow the Narragansett Tribe to open a casino.

In the opinion [PDF], the court said the proposed casino is illegal because it wouldn't be operated by the state as required by the state constitution The tribe is partnering with Harrah's Entertainment to open the casino.

The tribe will keep fighting to a casino, Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas said. Gov. Donald Carcieri (R) is opposed to the tribe's gaming plans.
