Gaming a boon for Oneida Nation, local community

The Pueblo Chieftain in Pueblo, Colorado, wraps up its series on the impact of gaming for the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin.

The paper finds a mostly positive story. Gaming has helped the tribe meet its needs, provide jobs and spur economic development. A Wal-Mart Supercenter and Sam's Club are located on the reservation.

The local community also has benefited, the paper says. The Oneida Nation's enterprises are third largest in Green Bay but some business owners think the tribe has an unfair advantage. The city's downtown has become vacant in recent years, with some saying the tribe is drawing people away.

The paper looked into the Oneida Nation due to the possibility of a tribal casino in Pueblo, a city similar in population and economics to Green Bay. The Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma have proposed a casino in Pueblo.
