New Mohegan chair changes stance on casino

Bruce Bozsum, the new chairman of the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut, has changed his mind about the tribe's involvement in an out-of-state casino.

Prior to being elected, Bozsum questioned his tribe's backing of the Cowlitz Tribe's casino. But now he says he supports the venture because it would help the Cowlitz people and the local community in Washington.

Bozsum and other newly elected Mohegan leaders went to Washington meet with the Cowlitz Tribe and see the casino site. The Cowlitz Tribe is seeking approval to acquire the land as part of an initial reservation under provisions of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act that apply to newly recognized tribes. The Cowlitz were recognized through the Bureau of Indian Affairs process.
