Salt River landowners push for taller casino hotel

Landowners of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community in Arizona are pushing for the tribe to increase the height limit on a proposed casino hotel.

The landowners presented a petition with more than 800 signatures to the tribal council, prompting the council to put the issue on a ballot initiative scheduled for next Monday. Tribal members say raising the height limit will generate more revenues, which will translate into bigger per capita payments.

If passed, the initiative would allow a 15-story hotel at the Talking Stick Casino near the Scottsdale border. It would also allow six-story buildings along a major highway.
