Two compacts for off-reservation casinos in Barstow, California, were rejected by a legislative committee on Wednesday.

The Assembly Committee on Governmental Organization voted 7-2 against compacts for the Los Coyotes Band of the Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians and the Big Lagoon Rancheria. The tribes expressed disappointment but said they will continue to push for approval.

The tribes want to open side-by-side casinos near Interstate 5 in Barstow, about halfway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. The Los Coyotes Band is about 114 miles from the proposed site while the Big Lagoon Rancheria is about 730 miles away.
