Summary of Narragansett Tribe casino deal released

The Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island and Harrah's Entertainment released details of their casino agreement on Tuesday.

The tribe will receive 5 percent of after-tax revenues of the casino. Harrah's will also pay an up-front fee of $300,000, plus annual contributions of at least $75,000, to special health and education funds for the tribe.

The tribe's share of revenues grows if the casino makes more money. A tribal lawyer said the tribe could be making $20 million a year by the third year of operation.

The tribe and Harrah's are working together to open a casino in West Warwick. It requires voters to approve a change in the state constitution. Gov. Donald Carcieri (R) has filed a legal challenge to the proposed constitutional amendment.
