The Gabrieleno/Tongva Band of Mission Indians is proposing to turn a racetrack in the Los Angeles area into a casino.
The proposal at the Hollywood Park racetrack in Inglewood was inserted into a bill this week, Copley News Service reported. But without federal recognition or a land base, the tribe faces significant hurdles, observers said.
The tribe is recognized by the state. Its petition for federal recognition is pending at the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
