The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation is fighting the state of Connecticut over a tax imposed on slot machines.
The state claims it has the right to tax slot machines that are leased to the tribe. The town of Ledyard has been collecting the taxes on about 500 machines since 2003.
The tribe and its vendor, Atlantic City Coin and Slot Service Co., went to federal court to challenge the tax. The state filed a motion to drop Atlantic City Coin as a plaintiff in hopes of having the case dismissed.
Under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, states cannot impose taxes on tribal gaming operations. Connecticut's tribal-state compact does not authorize the slot tax, the tribe said.
