Keweenaw Bay Indian Community waits on BIA

The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community in Michigan is hopeful that it will gain federal approval to relocate its casino.

The tribe filed a two-part determination application in March. President/CEO Susan LaFernier said she is waiting to hear back from the Bureau of Indian Affairs for the next step in the process.

The tribe previously filed a land-into-trust application for the land in 1999. The two-part determination is necessary to conduct gaming on the site.

A bill pending in the Senate would eliminate the two-part determination process altogether.
