Mississippi Choctaw casino goes before voters

Voters in Jackson County are going to the polls today to consider the off-reservation casino sought by the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.

The tribe wants to build a $375 million casino resort in Ocean Springs. The site is more than 200 miles from the reservation.

The tribe has already begun the land-into-trust process to use the site for gaming. But even if the Bureau of Indian Affairs approves, Gov. Hayley Barbour (R) has already said he will reject the casino.

Today's vote is a non-binding referendum. The Mississippi Press and The Biloxi Sun Herald are urging voters to reject the casino.
