Soboba chair receives NIGA humanitarian award

Robert Salgado, the chairman of the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians, received the Wendell Chino Humanitarian Award from the National Indian Gaming Association on Tuesday night.

Salgado, 65, was selected for his decades of leadership to his tribe. He paid tribute to Wendell Chino, the late Mescalero Apache leader for whom the award is named, and lectured Indian men about violence against women.

"You take care of our Indian women. They're not to be abused. You understand?" Salgado said, The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported.

The award was presented during NIGA's trade show and convention, which was held in San Diego, California, this week.
