Mohegan Tribe halts casino project due to economy

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut has suspended a casino expansion project due to economic woes.

The tribe was going to spend $734 million to add a tower, a House of Blues club, a spa and retail and restaurant space to the Mohegan Sun Casino. But the tribe will wait another year before deciding whether to proceed.

”It just made sense to take a step back,” Vice chair Lynn Malerba told The New London Day. "It's just time to wait, and wait for the economy to rebound before we move forward. I don't think we're alone in that.

The tribe recently completed a major expansion of the gaming floor at the casino and will continue to make other improvements, executives said.
