Kansas tribal casinos weathering the recession

The Potawatomi Prairie Band Nation and the Kickapoo Tribe of Kansas say their casinos don't seem to be affected by the recession.

“Actually, we’ve seen very little effects of the recession,” said Stephen Ortiz, the director of marketing for the Prairie Band Casino and Resort, told The Topeka Capital-Journal. “We’ve actually had a great first quarter.”

Steve Dole, the general manager of the Golden Eagle Casino, told the paper that the Kickapoos “holding our own if not making some headway.”

Both tribes are taking steps to draw more customers to their facilities. The Prairie Band recently remodeled the casino floor and buffet, announced new concerts and will soon debut a new marketing campaign.

The Kickapoo Tribe is upgrading its casino and booking music acts that appeal to younger customers. The tribe is also considering a move to be closer to a major highway.
