Saginaw Chippewa Tribe sues NLRB over gaming dispute

The Saginaw Chippewa Tribe of Michigan asked a federal judge to stop the National Labor Relations Board from hearing a gaming employee case.

The tribe says the NLRB's hearing, which is scheduled to take place next Wednesday, infringes on its sovereignty. At issue is an unfair labor practice case filed by a former employee of the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort.

“The board’s actions will put the existence of the Saginaw Tribe’s sovereign rights to be governed by its own laws and conduct its own economic enterprises and governmental gaming at the [casino] on trial,” the complaint states, a copy of which was posted by Turtle Talk.

In a similar case, a federal judge in Oklahoma blocked the NLRB from investigating unfair labor practices at a Chickasaw Nation casino. The Obama administration is appealing the ruling.
