Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe makes case for vote on casino

The Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe is asking three communities to schedule casino elections.

The tribe is looking at sites in Lakeville, Freetown and Fall River. H.3702, the state's gaming law, requires a host community to schedule a referendum on a proposed casino.

The tribe has yet to present details about its plans. Chairwoman Cheryl Andrews-Maltais promised more information as the casino vote approaches.

H.3702 requires a community to hold an election not less than 60 days but no more than 90 days after receiving a request. Depending on the timeline, that would place a vote sometime between May 7 and June 6.

The law also requires the tribe to negotiate a Class III gaming compact by July 31. Gov. Deval Patrick (D) has not responded to the tribe's request.
