Unions worry about Indian preference policy at Pequot casino

Labor unions are worried about Indian preference policies at the casino owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut.

The United Auto Workers represents more than 2,000 card dealers at the Foxwoods Resort Casino. A very small number -- 15, according to the Associated Press -- are tribal members but the union president suggested they are treated better than non-Indians when it comes to salaries.

The United Food and Commercial Workers represents more than 300 beverage workers. The union is heading into arbitration over its contract due to concerns that tribal members are getting priority, the AP reported.

The tribe extends hiring preferences to its members, their spouses and members of other federally recognized tribes.
