Pala Band uses family's property for sewer pump near casino

The Pala Band of Mission Indians in California placed a casino sewer pump on an Indian allotment without the family's permission, The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The tribe offered $80 a year to use a portion of a two-acre allotment for the sewer pump. The family rejected the offer but the tribe installed the station anyway.

“This is a big deal,” Johnny Ayala, a family member, told the paper. “There are millions of gallons of sewage going through here.”

The tribe says the $80 was fair because the sewer pump only takes up 0.14 acres of the allotment. Talks are underway for a potential agreement, with the involvement of the the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
