United Keetoowah Band faces opposition at potential casino site

The United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians is headquartered in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Photo from Facebook The United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians might be looking to rejoin the Indian gaming industry.

The tribe operated the Keetoowah Cherokee Casino in Tahlequah for nearly 30 years. But it closed in August 2013 due to questions about its legality.

The tribe is now interested in a casino in Enid, more than 180 miles from Tahlequah, according to news reports. Local officials there say they have been approached about a potential development.

The talks were supposed to be private and two commissioners signed non-disclosure agreements, The Enid News and Eagle reported. But a third commissioner who opposes the project went ahead and spilled the beans.

"I believe that it is in the best interest for the city of Enid to disclose the details of this proposal before it progresses any further," commissioner Ben Ezzell told the paper.

The tribe hasn't confirmed whether it is indeed interested in pursuing a casino in Enid.
