The Kalispel Tribe announced a $20 million expansion of its casino in Washington.

The Northern Quest Resort and Casino will grow by 40,000 square-feet to accommodate a new family friendly entertainment center, a new retail outlet and a larger food court. And a recreational vehicle park with amenities like a pool and sports facilities is being built on a site right next door.

"We've worked very hard the past 17 years to ensure our successful gaming opportunities create a thriving and sustainable source of funding for our government, while providing our people with access to quality education, healthcare and employment," Chairman Glen Nenema said in a press release. "Throughout it all, our intent has been to diversify and build on our dream of creating a fun place for the whole family."

The tribe has long made efforts to diversify its economy and the area around the casino, which was one of the first off-reservation facilities approved under the two-part determination provisions of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. But new competition is arriving as the Spokane Tribe prepares to open its own gaming facility not far from Northern Quest.

The Spokane casino is expected to debut in August 2017. The Kalispel expansion is slated to be finished in spring of 2018.
