Maine House approves Passamaquoddy slot bill

Wednesday, April 11, 2007

The Maine House of Representatives voted 82-60 on Tuesday to pass a bill that allows the Passamaquoddy Tribe to install slot machines at a proposed racetrack.

The bill goes to the Senate and faces at least one more House vote. Gov. John Baldacci (D) has said he will veto it.

The issue is likely to end up on the November ballot. In 2004, state voters authorized slot machines at two non-Indian racetracks but rejected a similar proposal by the Passamaquoddy Tribe and the Penobscot Nation.

The Penobscot Nation is backing another bill to install slot machines at a bingo facility on the reservation.
