Navajo Nation auctions slot machine rights
Tuesday, January 29, 2008
The Navajo Nation is auctioning the rights to some of its slot machines in Arizona.
The tribe signed a Class III compact with the state that allows 1,400 slot machines. But without a casino on the Arizona portion of its reservation, the tribe can lease the rights to other gaming tribes.
The tribe didn't say how many slot machines are being leased or who bid on the rights.
President Joe Shirley said the three biggest gaming tribes offered bids.
The tribe plans to open a casino near Gallup, New Mexico, this summer.
