California lawmaker drops charitable gaming bill

Friday, April 18, 2008

A California lawmaker has withdrawn a bill that would expand the charitable gaming industry.

Sen. Darrell Steinberg, a Democrat and the incoming leader of the Senate, wanted to allow charities to operate electronic gaming machines. Tribes were opposed to the proposal.

Just a few days ago, Steinberg said he was going to move forward with SB 1626, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported. He changed his mind after a court ruling in a charitable gaming case.
