Opponents seek Congressional action over Kialegee casino

Gaming opponents are looking to Congress to block the Kialegee Tribal Town from opening a casino on an Indian allotment near Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.

Upwards of 800 people attended a forum at a church last night to discuss the Red Clay Casino. "We think Congressional action could block this," one pastor said, Fox 23 News reported.

Rep. John Sullivan (R-Oklahoma) is siding with the opposition. He will meet with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the National Indian Gaming Commission next week to discuss the casino.

"We're going to do all we can to try and derail this," Sullivan said at the forum, Fox 23 News reported.

The NIGC is working on an Indian land determination for the casino. According to the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, "Indian lands" means:

(A) all lands within the limits of any Indian reservation; and
(B) any lands title to which is either held in trust by the United States for the benefit of any Indian tribe or individual or held by any Indian tribe or individual subject to restriction by the United States against alienation and over which an Indian tribe exercises governmental power.
