Newspaper calls on New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) to resolve gaming issues with the Cayuga Nation:
Shortly after the Oneidas' deal was announced, the Cayuga Indian Nation of New York began legal maneuvers to block the exclusivity provision, saying it's not legal because the Cayugas' have rights to open a facility in Cayuga County. The tribe then went a step further, re-opening a bingo hall despite not having a local license to do so and despite the possibility that it could be violating the deal the state struck with the Oneidas. This all happened several weeks ago, but we've yet to hear any concrete response from the state on what they're going to do about the Cayugas. And a number of local officials have talked about a similar silence from Albany. We do know that the Cayugas have formally asked to enter into negotiations with the state for their own casino -- but Cuomo's response to that request is a mystery. This evading needs to stop. People need to know where their state government stands with respect to gambling expansion in Cayuga County.Get the Story:
