Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation not ready for casino

Wednesday, May 10, 2006

The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation of Kansas says its purchase of ancestral land in Illinois is not about a casino.

Chairwoman Tracy Stanhoff and other tribal leaders held a press conference in Shabbona, Illinois, to discuss the purchase of 128 acres. They said they have no plans for gaming on what is now a farm.

But most reporters and residents are curious about a casino, a proposal that faces hurdles. House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Illinois), whose district includes Shabbona, said he will oppose gaming on the site.
