Michigan tribe seeks approval to move casino

The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community of Michigan is seeking federal and state approval to move its casino to a new location.

The tribe operates two gaming facilities, the Ojibwa I Casino in Baraga and the Ojibwa Casino II in Marquette.

The tribe wants to move the Ojibwa II Casino 30 miles away to a much larger site. The new facility will be much larger and employ twice as many workers.

To gain approval, the tribe filed a two-part determination application with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. If the BIA approves, the state governor must concur with the decision.

Under a bill pending in the Senate, tribes will no longer be able to open casinos on off-reservation land under the two-part determination.
