Brief Description of Duties to Be Performed: The Diabetes Control Officer within our Tribal Health Program Support Department will work closely with the Nashville Area Office (NAO) of Public Health (OPH) staff. He/she will be responsible for providing diabetes prevention/treatment/management/nutrition services to all federally recognized tribes within the Nashville Area of the Indian Health Service (IHS) regardless of whether or not they are members of USET. Establish effective comprehensive tribal health based diabetes teams at each tribal site. Have physicians and health professional trained in the prevention, treatment, and management of diabetes. Assist in the development of a curriculum for diabetes education provided for each individual Area Tribe throughout the Nashville Area and to establish a tracking system to measure the success of the diabetes control program.

Minimum Requirements: Minimum of Bachelors Degree in a Health related field with emphasis in prevention, treatment, and management of Diabetes and related complications obtained from an accredited college or university that has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Documented experience in a paid health-related position will be considered in lieu of a degree. Minimum of five years working in a paid position demonstrating knowledge of Diabetes prevention practices and treatment of Diabetes related complications.
Knowledge of program planning/evaluation and possess excellent verbal, written communication and organizational skills. He/she must be computer literate and proficient. You must be able to obtain Certification in Diabetes Education (CDE) within the first year of employment and to maintain certification throughout duration of employment. Must have cultural sensitivity/ability to work within the customs and traditions of various tribal nations. Ability to travel and work irregular hours as necessary.
