The Wilderness Society (TWS), a national non-profit membership organization devoted to preserving wilderness and inspiring American’s to care for our wild places since 1935, seeks a highly creative and skilled media relations professional to join its team.

This media relations position supports The Wilderness Society’s work that focuses on priority defense campaigns at the national and regional levels that are designed to protect the wildlife, stunning lands and waters, sacred sites and opportunities to visit and enjoy our parks and many other public lands.

This staff member will lead the development of earned media strategies for their region, supporting The Wilderness Society’s priority public lands campaigns in the Northern Rockies region (Idaho, Montana and Wyoming). This position will also lead strategic media relations for The Wilderness Society’s national campaign to defend our nation's forests.

This position plays an important role in supporting an inclusive organizational culture that is grounded in trust and accountability to shared goals and outcomes. **The position location is either in Boise, Idaho or Bozeman, Montana.**


The ideal candidate has significant experience with advocacy campaigns and/or political media relations work, outstanding strategic instincts, excellent writing skills, and a proven track record in working with print, digital and broadcast journalists, social media, and broader media initiatives. Experience with legislative/public affairs campaigns is desirable. The ability to lead initiatives, prioritize critical work over distracting demands, adapt to ever changing political climates and work effectively within teams and coalitions is essential.


• Leading and participating in the development of issue-based communications strategies (including digital and social media), message research and development, and campaign planning (in close collaboration with the organization’s regional and/or state director, appropriate campaign staff, other communications staff, and coalition partners);
• Assisting TWS staff with media outreach, including handling breaking news and developing story concepts;
• Initiating and maintaining excellent working relationships with key members of the media, with travel to various states in the region to develop those relationships as needed;
• Working closely with local and regional partners and coalitions;
• Developing new messengers, through outreach and training, to effectively deliver conservation messages from diverse constituencies;
• Track record working successfully in teams representing a rich mix of talent, backgrounds, and perspectives—across race and gender.
• Crafting a variety of messaging and outreach materials that fit different campaigns accordingly, including op-eds, letters to the editor, press releases, website and/or social media content, briefing packages for print and broadcast media, and utilizing paid media tactics when applicable;
• Coordinating with TWS staff and outside consultants/vendors in support of assigned programs and priorities;
• Managing budgets for applicable communications efforts as needed;
• Collaborating closely with TWS digital and marketing team to help develop content based on campaign goals; and
• Tracking media clips relevant to campaign and field work.


Experience, Competencies, and Education

• 5-7 years of demonstrated experience developing communications strategies, especially in public relations, public involvement or advocacy settings
• Demonstrated expertise in working with both traditional and new media (including social media)
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communications skills
• Demonstrated ability to work quickly under deadline
• Experience developing communications strategies in collaborative settings with diverse interests and audiences a plus
• Familiarity with conservation and/or public lands a plus
• Ability to travel once or twice a month for campaign meetings and to develop media/reporter relationships
• Video production skills a plus
• Proficiency with graphic design applications a plus
