GENERAL DESCRIPTION


The Director for Regional Communications Strategy plays a critical role in our efforts to communicate with the media about the importance of our parks and public lands for nature and for people. This position leads our communications as we build reporter relationships and elevate local storytelling in regional and national markets to protect wild places for future generations.

The Director for Regional Communications plays a critical role in establishing and reinforcing an inclusive organizational culture that is grounded in trust and accountability to shared goals and outcomes. This position will integrate these priorities throughout our communications work, from expanding our media relationships to bringing an equity lens to all facets of our media relations efforts. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Leads communications strategies for TWS regional offices and national priority campaigns that support our strategic goals to protect our wildlands, transition to a clean energy future, and connect people to the outdoors.
• Builds equity into all facets of work, including incorporating a wide array of perspectives from local communities in both regional and national level responsibilities. This includes engaging communities that historically have not benefited from our public lands.
• Develops a team of communications professionals. Supports and leads strong performance of the regional Communications team, including staff roles and relationships, operations, staff development, supervision, and inter-staff communications.
• Drives integrated and consistent messaging throughout local and national media channels (working in strong partnership with the Director of Communications Strategy for our Washington, DC office).
• Consistently partners with our Digital and Marketing teams to elevate regional issues that can move and inspire our audiences.
• Develops and manages annual plans and budgets, with staff, for applicable communications efforts.
• Ensures the regional Communications team initiates and maintains excellent working relationships with key members of the media, including broadcast and new media outlets. Facilitates optimal conservation staff access to media and any training needed for staff to be prepared to engage with media.
• Coordinates closely with Philanthropy staff on messaging for fundraising materials such as annual reports and organizational newsletters, and on raising funds for staffing and operations of communications.
• Performs other duties as required or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience, Competencies, and Education

• Minimum 8-10 years of relevant experience in advocacy, campaign, environment, or political communications work.
• Experience leading and managing teams representing a rich mix of talent, backgrounds, and perspectives. This includes a track record of successful recruitment, cultivation, and retention of highly skilled staff across race and gender.
• Demonstrated understanding of how to identify and elevate local stories with the media, and driving coverage that moves people to action.
• Proven strong management skills with the ability to mentor and motivate staff, to provide leadership and to build an effective, successful team.
• Strong writing skills.
• Working knowledge of legislative process/public affairs.
• Demonstrated success in leading development of communications strategy.
• Basic understanding of the integrated role of digital and social media communications with earned media, to maximize visibility and audience engagement.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to work collaboratively within the context of a team environment and network of relationships.
• Solution-oriented and self-motivated.
• Willingness and ability to travel both nationally and regionally when needed.
