The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, a federally-recognized Indian tribe, is seeking a General Counsel with extensive legal, management, and leadership experience to manage the legal affairs of the Community government, its divisions and enterprises (“Community”). The Community’s General Counsel is the chief legal counsel for the Community and provides legal advice and representation to this progressive Community.

The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community is located adjacent to the Phoenix Metropolitan area. With over 10,000 tribal members, 56,000 acres of land, and over 5,000 employees, the Community has diverse and complicated legal affairs.

Duties
In addition to managing the Office of the General Counsel, the General Counsel would directly advise the Community Council and senior government and enterprise management in matters such as employment law, commercial and business transactions, Indian leasing, Indian gaming, historical & cultural preservation, tax issues, and many other important matters.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree and graduate of an accredited law school, with a minimum of seven (7) years of experience practicing law which included some experience in at least three or more of the following areas: federal Indian law, employment law, commercial transactions, gaming law, leasing, and planning and zoning, A minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience and some experience/familiarity with executive, legislative, and judicial functions of tribal government is also required.

Applicants must be a member in good standing of a State Bar, preferably the Arizona State Bar, and must be eligible to be or admitted to practice in Federal District Court. No outstanding contempt citation from any court. If not licensed and certified by the Arizona State Bar as of the date of hiring, employment shall be conditioned on successful completion and passing of the Arizona State Bar exam within one (1) year of the date of hire.

Special Requirements
This position may be expected to work evenings and weekends as needed and is
not subject to a standard work schedule. This position is expected to devote full
time to the duties of the office and shall not directly or indirectly engage in the
private practice of law or in an occupation conflicting with such duties.
