Ethics charges dog former Navajo Nation president

When Albert Hale was appointed to the Arizona Senate, the press release he sent out said he was an attorney. But most remember him as the Navajo Nation president who resigned after being accused of misusing tribal funds and accepting gifts from companies seeking tribal business.

But for Hale, 53, those days are long gone. He said he was investigated several times during his tenure but nothing came of it. As for the gifts, he said he never benefited personally.

Others aren't so sure. Former Navajo president Peterson Zah told The Arizona Republic Hale has to "earn our support and respect." A county official didn't vote for Hale to replace the retired Sen. Jack Jackson Sr., also Navajo, because he said other candidates were more qualified.

Hale has a year to serve for Jackson, who retired due to health reasons. Hale has not said whether he will seek re-election.
