BIA settles drunk-driving lawsuit for $2M

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has agreed to pay $2 million to the family of a Nebraska couple killed by an ex-employee.

The Ramaekers reached the settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit they field against the BIA. The suit accused the BIA of letting ex-employee Lloyd Larson operate government vehicles despite knowing he had a drinking problem.

Larson was driving a BIA vehicle the wrong way on a highway in New Mexico when he ran head-on into a vehicle carrying the Ramaekers and another couple. Both couples died.

The family of the second couple settled with the BIA for $2 million.
