Inupiat village loses fire department to fire

The Alaska Native village of Kaktovik lost its entire fire department to a fire on Tuesday night.

The blaze apparently started within the fire building. All the equipment was destroyed except for an ambulance.

The fire threatened to spread to the health clinic next door. Lacking equipment, village firefighters and residents saved the building with a small hose and water.

The loss of the fire department is estimated between $4 million and $5 million.
