Bill boosting Indian education funding advances

The Montana House Appropriations Committee voted 11-9 on Thursday to approve $6.1 million for Indian education.

The state constitution requires public schools to teach about Indian history and culture. But the state has never provided any money to carry out the mandate.

Rep. Carol Juneau (D), a member of the Blackfeet Nation, sponsored the bill.
