A Native leader who praised Adolf Hitler for the Holocaust and accused Jewish people of controlling the media will lose his membership in the prestigious Order of Canada.

Ahenakew was inducted into the Order of Canada in 1978 [Article]. He was selected for his leadership of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations. He later went on to serve as chief of the Assembly of First Nations.

But his record was marred by his comments, which were condemned by Native and Jewish leaders. He later went to trial on hate crimes charges. A verdict is due today.
