Votes scheduled on $286.5B transportation bill

The House and Senate are scheduled to vote on a $286.5 billion highway transportation bill.

The 1,600-page package is expected to be signed into law by President Bush despite previous assertions that it costs too much. The final bill strips about $11 billion that had been approved by the Senate, bringing it down to the amount contained in the House version.

The bill reauthorizes the Indian Reservation Roads program for five more fiscal years. According to the conference report, the program will be funded at $325 million for 2004, $365 million for 2005, $390 million for 2006, $395 million for 2007, $420 million for 2008 and $420 million for 2009.
