Public schools in Maine are now required to teach about the Wabanaki people and the history of Native Americans.
The requirement stems from a law passed in 2001. The Wabanaki Studies Commission, a panel of tribal leaders and educators, issued a report in October 2003 to help schools comply with the act. The state Department of Education says tribal history should be included in all parts of the curriculum and at every grade level.
The Wabanakis include the Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Maliseet and Micmac tribes.
