Tribe says NAGPRA amendment will right a wrong

A proposed amendment to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act is an attempt to right a wrong that was identified in the Kennewick Man case, a lawyer for the Confederated Colville Tribes says.

The Colvilles and three other federally recognized tribes sough to repatriate the 9.000-year-old Kennewick Man. But they were blocked by a federal appeals court that said the tribes could not show a connection to the remains.

Sen. McCain (R-Arizona) has since reintroduced a bill that would help tribes claim ancient remains. The Colvilles and the other tribes say the amendment will not affect the Kennewick Man case but the scientists that want to study him are opposing the legislation.
