The Omaha Tribe of Nebraska has its first woman leader.

Eleanor Baxter was chosen as the chairperson of the tribal council on Tuesday. She plans to make economic development and employment a priority and improve relations with the state and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Baxter was chosen a day after tribal members went to the polls to elect two council members. Incumbent Barry Webster and former councilman Mitchell Parker were elected to three-year terms.

The election marked the first time that the Omaha Tribe has held elections for staggered terms.
