The 16th annual Centennial Accord meeting was held on Thursday on the Chehalis Reservation in Washington.
Representatives from 27 of the 29 tribes in the state met with Gov. Christine Gregoire (D) to discuss their concerns. According to The Tacoma News Tribune, they asked for a moratorium on non-Indian gambling, revenue-sharing on the collection of certain state taxes, recognition of tribal taxing authority, recognition of tribal hunting rights on ceded lands, support for a federal shellfish management plan and more funding for tribal languages in public schools.
The Centennial Accord meeting is held every year. The accord recognizes tribal sovereignty and a government-to-government relationship between the tribes and the state.
